Motorbike MOT: due date calculator and checklist

In England, Scotland and Wales a motorbike needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its first registration, then every year after that. You can get the MOT up to a month (minus a day) before the current one runs out and keep the same renewal date. Riding without a valid MOT can cost a fine of up to £1,000.

When is my MOT due?

For bikes registered in England, Scotland and Wales. The dates stay in your browser: nothing is sent or stored.

How the MOT date works

The first MOT is due by the third anniversary of the bike's first registration, the date on the V5C, not the date you bought it. From then on an MOT lasts a year and the next one is due by the anniversary of the last. Test within the month (minus a day) before the expiry and the renewal date stays put; test earlier and the new MOT runs for a year minus a day from the pass. A bike registered on 29 February is treated as due on 28 February, the earlier of the two possible dates.

Bikes built or first registered more than 40 years ago may not need an MOT at all if they have not been substantially changed. Bikes registered in Northern Ireland follow different rules and are out of scope here: see nidirect.

Motorbike MOT checklist

What the tester looks at, from GOV.UK's list of motorcycle parts checked at an MOT. Go through it the week before the test; most of it you can check at home with the bike on its stand. The MOT does not cover the engine, clutch or gearbox. For every item and the exact reasons for failure, read the MOT inspection manual for motorcycles.

If it fails, or the MOT has run out

A bike fails when the result lists dangerous or major problems. You can ride it away only if the old MOT is still valid and nothing dangerous was listed; otherwise it needs repairing first. Riding a bike that failed on a dangerous problem can bring a fine of up to £2,500, a ban and 3 penalty points, and riding without a valid MOT can bring a fine of up to £1,000. A SORN does not pause the MOT; our SORN guide explains what to do in spring.

Motorbike MOT questions

When does a new motorbike need its first MOT?

By the third anniversary of its first registration. GOV.UK's fees table lists 3 years as the first-MOT age for motorcycles of any engine size, with or without a sidecar. After that the MOT is due every year.

How early can I get my motorbike MOT?

Up to a month (minus a day) before the current MOT runs out, and you keep the same renewal date. GOV.UK's example: if the MOT runs out on 15 May, the earliest test that keeps the date is 16 April. Test earlier than that and the new MOT runs for one year minus a day from the pass date.

What happens if my motorbike fails its MOT?

A bike fails if the result lists dangerous or major problems. You can ride it away only if the current MOT is still valid and no dangerous problems were listed; otherwise it has to be repaired first. Riding a bike that failed with a dangerous problem can mean a fine of up to £2,500, a driving ban and 3 penalty points. Minor problems and advisories do not cause a fail.

What is the fine for riding without an MOT?

Up to £1,000 for using a vehicle without a valid MOT, according to GOV.UK.

Do classic motorbikes need an MOT?

Not if the bike was built or first registered more than 40 years ago and has not been substantially changed, for example with a replaced frame or engine that alters how it works. You do not have to apply for this exemption, but the bike must still be roadworthy. The calculator flags bikes over 40 years old; whether yours qualifies depends on its history.

Does the MOT check the engine?

No. The MOT is not a service, and it does not cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox.

Is the MOT the same in Northern Ireland?

No. Vehicles registered in Northern Ireland follow different rules and are tested by the DVA, so this calculator does not cover them. Check nidirect for the Northern Ireland schedule.
